The collage subject for the second week of Art 115: Subtle Tension
Here is what I came up with. Not too bad. It looks better in real life, as I've still not mastered the lighting in my photos of my collages.
Here is that same shot, after I played with it for a bit. It would need some major additional modification before I considered this a finished product, but I rather like how this is coming around. I'll may have to consider this direction for a series of experimental photos.
And just for fun, here is a picture of my high-tech collage studio, complete with furry dictatorial supervisor.

Damn. In fact, double damnity-damn.
I believe I've discovered that I'm really bad at collage work. One down, eight more to go.
Our second self-portrait assignment in Art 115 was a collage. (Two self-portraits? Come on!) I was trying to relay the ideas of chaos and light, filtering in through the lens of my eye.
Below is what I eventually came up with. I don't care for it, but then again, I'm a snobby perfectionist. Usually, I'll keep trying and trying and trying something, until I get it just right.
Except where collages are concerned. They can straight-up go away.
Unfortunately, the photo below (click for larger) doesn't give a proper sense of scale. The rectangle we've been asked to fill is about the size of a postcard, which makes delicate work all the more necessary. Sadly, I'm just not a delicate man. I'm a blunt man. I say blunt things and I drink blunt drinks.
I just hate this one.

Literally the First Artwork I've Done Since 1986

I was asked to do a self-portrait for my Art 115 (Design Fundamentals) class. This is what I came up with (click photo for larger version).
It's based upon the idea of a playing card. Also, it has minimalism and art-deco influences. Nothing too amazing, but I was rather pleased. Not too bad, especially considering this is literally the first artwork I've done since 1986. Hopefully the grading will go well.
The photo of my artwork though, I'm not nearly as happy with. I need to practice. That darkness toward the bottom of the photo is unacceptable. I've tried a few different techniques to get a pristine image, but I'm still not nearly satisfied. Oh well... I'm a photography student, after all. That will come with time. What I actually need are some good lights, which really means I just need some good money for some good lights. Which really means that what I need is a good job, for some good money, for some good lights.
That is a whole different battle altogether...
